RNC Activist Glenn Dyer Sentenced to 30 Days
Glenn Dyer of New York was sentenced by Judge Paulette Flynn in Ramsey County court today to 30 days in jail. With three days credit and good behavior, he'll likely serve 17 days and be released on June 13. Dyer pled guilty on March 27 (without a plea agreement) to first degree criminal damage to property, a felony stemming from the broken windows of Macy's on September 1st.
Prosecutor Richard Dusterhoft, notorious for his agressive prosecutions, admitted that Dyer's pre-sentence investigation was "impressive" but argued that this meant Dyer should receive a stiff sentence anyway because he "should've known better." "I hadn't heard of that argument before," Dyer's attorney Michael McDonald replied as his only response.
For his part, Dyer spoke only briefly of his training as social studies teacher in New York and the fact that this was his first criminal conviction.
At the end of the short 10-minute hearing, Judge Flynn then ruled for a stay of imposition, meaning the felony will be reduced to a gross misdemeanor after the sentence has been completed; probation for up to 5 years; a $100 fine (less due to Dyer's financial status), and restitution. Although the Macy's window was valued at $2,736.84, Dyer's attorney argued that this figure accounted for three broken Macy's windows, not just the one Dyer was charged with breaking, and will be contested later.
Dyer was taken into custody immediately and friends from the Twin Cities and out of town gathered outside the courtroom to organize support. Letters can be sent to him (no inmate number required) at:

Earlier this year, Dustin Matchett-Morales was given a two months sentence for a similar offense.
Amongst other RNC felony cases, Dave Mahoney is scheduled to be in court on Monday, June 1st; Jesee Forrey will be on trial call beginning June 1; and Christina Vana and Karen Meissner have a motion hearing at 9am on Friday, May 29. The RNC 8 have no scheduled court date.
